Ever wonder what happened to the statues from the American Legion Alabama War Memorial? They are underneath the Alabama Capitol Building.

Some years ago, the American Legion state headquarters was having a problem with their memorial to veterans next to their building. They had statues of soldiers from different periods, from the American Revolution to Vietnam, on pedestals, along with a larger stone memorial to all veterans. Unfortunately, vandals began to damage parts of the statues, so a decision was made to move them to a safe location while considering a new future memorial. The statues can be found in a tunnel underneath the Capitol grounds.
The coordinates are for the street level entrance on the east side of the Capitol. This is the side on South Union Street. Near the Goat Hill Museum Store is an elevator. Choose the "T" button to get to the tunnel level. Walk through the large room and when you enter the tunnel area you will see the statues as seen in the photo.
In some ways, this is a double secret. Most people do not know about the room and tunnel under the Capitol grounds. They also do not know about the statues and their history.
