The Pillory of Benavente was supposedly erected in 1516, when allocating the new municipality of Benavente (Carta de Foral) by King D. Manuel I. As a symbol of municipal jurisdiction, the pillory was erected by the Town Hall, in the main square of the village, where he was also the ancient Church (overthrown by the earthquake of 1909).

In the seventeenth century, the pillory was transported to New Square and on the left of the old Town Hall, so that this site could continue held the bull runs (Corridas de Touros similar to Bullfights). With the construction of new city hall building Hall, which would extend the area of ??the previous one, the pillory was dismounted in 1847 and was only rebuilt in 1954, this time in the center of the new municipality square.

The pillory Benavente is made of a very good stone , top with his irons, weather vane, and the Cross of St. Benedict with its golden pomas with five steps to round the same precious stones
Before being demolished, the Pelourinho did not presented its initial construction, since one could notice the absence of the vane, cross and golden pomas. The irons present at the time of its demolition, were not the originals also. Those that existed at the time were used to sustain a balance, membership of the City Council to weigh the fish every morning, before selling so the city hall could charge Fish Tax.

The pillory present today was erected in 1954 using the original stones kept by the city hall. The original irons and chains are missing and it´s crowned by a steeple with the armillary sphere and a cross.
