Although not as high as the major Cascade Peaks of Oregon, Newberry Volcano is larger in both area and volume. It covers an area of over 500 square miles, has an eruptive volume of at least 110 cubic miles, and has been active for the last half million year. Newberry Crater, a 17 square mile caldera, occupies the summit region of Newberry Volcano.
The current caldera formed about 80,000 years ago. Since then numerous eruptions have more than half filled the caldera. About 7,700 years ago the eruption of Mt. Mazama (Crater Lake) deposited at least a foot of pumice over the entire volcano. Since then there have been four eruptive episodes:
1. 7300 years ago - Interlake Eruptive Episode
----Central Pumice Cone
----Interlake Obsidian Flow
----East Lake Tephra
2. 7000 years ago - Northwest Rift Eruptive Episode
----Lava Butte cinder cone and lava flow
----Gas Line spatter cones and lava flows
----Mokst Butte cinder cone and lava flow
----South Kelsey cinder cones and lava flow
----North Sugarpine spatter cones and lava flow
----South Sugarpine cinder cone and lava flow
----Forest Road spatter cones and lava flow
----Lava Cast Forest spatter cones and lava flow
----Lava Cascade spatter cones and lava flow
----Hidden spatter cone and lava flow
----North Summit spatter cones and lava flow
----East Lake Fissure spatter rampart
----The Dome cinder cone and lava flow
----Surveyor cinder cone and lava flow
3. 3500 years ago - East Lake Eruptive Episode
----the two East Lake Obsidian Flows
4. 1300 years ago - Big Obsidian Eruptive Episode
----Newberry Pumice - which has been found as far east as western Montana
----Paulina Lake Ashflow
----Big Obsidian Flow
