This border crossing, between Myanmar and Thailand, is the central of three such crossings. It is little used by westerners, however, it is a busy spot, as there is a fair amount of trade between the two countries, both formal and informal, plus many Myanmarians travel to Thailand for work.

At this location the Moei River forms a natural political boundary. The River is crossed via the Japanese built 'Friendship' bridge, which opened in 1997. Those desirous of crossing must first present themselves at the border crossing checkpoint. Both nations have near identical checkpoint facilities in an arch over their respective bridge entranceways. One approaches the arch, hands one's passport over, waits, and then walks 420m over the bridge (vehicles are not allowed—no idea why) to the other country. Then the process is repeated.

However, foreigners are not allowed to stay overnight in Myanmar. Permitted hours are: 08.00-18.00 (sign in gallery). As you enter Myanmar your passport is retained by the Myanmar immigration officials, and you are given a receipt (don't lose the receipt, it will be an expensive and time consuming operation to recover your passport). The cost of your day visit will be 500 baht (Thai currency is used here, equivalent to approximately $15). This cost includes a local service fee. When you wish to return to Thailand, return to the checkpoint, hand over your receipt and walk back.

If you wish to have a day tour there will be lots of locals at the checkpoint willing to show you around. Find someone who knows a little English. Say 300 baht for a day is a generous fee for a trip to see a few temples, sample some local cuisine, get a feel for the place. Myawaddy is safe enough, but you will see a few guys walking the streets with pistols, and (if you are a westerner) you will be offered any number of items and services. My advice, refuse all of these generous offers. Most are scams which will expensively backfire upon you. This region of Myanmar has a few issues, and issues with Thailand. Having said that, as with every place, 99% of the people in Myawaddy are truly pleasant and will be happy to see you.
