As well as highest in Dumfries and Galloway, Merrick is highest in Southern Uplands an arbitrary group of hills south of the line between Edinburgh to Glasgow.

The summit of Merrick is a popular walk in goood weather from Glen Trool near Bruce's Stone car park.
