The Waiting Miner statue was commissioned by the Central Electricity Board and was bound for the Ferrybridge power station situated on the River Aire in West Yorkshire. However, on it’s completion in 1966, the statue was given a new destination, that of nearby Richborough power station on the River Stour. It was in recognition of all the miners’ of Kent for their hard work in keeping Richborough supplied and generating electricity all year round.
When Richborough power station closed in September 1997, the statue was gifted by Powergen to Dover District Council who re-sited it outside the Kent National Coal Board offices on Dover seafront. Ever since then, various interested parties have been campaigning for the statue to have a more fitting resting place.
The result of their hard work has resulted in the statue being re-sited once more, this time to outside the entrance of Fowlmead Country Park, the former spoil tip of Betteshanger Colliery, which itself closed in 1989. Further landscaping work is planned around the memorial as and when funds permit.
