On May 8 1963 in Hue, a crowd of Buddhists protested against the ban of the Buddhist flag on the day of Phat Ðan, which commemorates the birth of Gautama Buddha. The police and army fired guns and launched grenades at the demonstrators, leaving eight dead. The memorial commemorates the death of these eight unarmed Buddhist civilians (including 7 minors from 12 to 17).
The incident spurred a protest movement by Buddhists against the religious discrimination perpetrated by the Roman Catholic-dominated Ngô Ðình Diem regime and sparked large scale acts of civil disobedience among the South Vietnamese. It was known as "the Buddhist crisis", a period of political and religious tension in South Vietnam which lasted from May to November 1963.
The names of the eight people who died are listed on the memorial.
