The starting of the building of the place was in 1775, by Manuel José da Gama Lobo Pessanha. However, personal problems with a powerful element of the community led to a stall in the works, and it took another 100 years for the palace to be completed.
The palace is also known as "Spaniard's Palace" as it hosted Spanish people who fled from the Civil War in Spain, in the late 30's.
