The time of origin can be dated back to ca. 1200 but the church was first mentioned in documents in 1589. Around the year 1600 the church, which was originally a simple long rectangular nave, was rebuilt much. The original choir in rod construction became replaced by a choir in a block design and also the portico, which flanked the church, was removed. It is also documented that in 1689 a storm damaged the church and the tower very strong.

A special feature are the diagonal piers like those at the stave church in Kvernes. The church has a north and a south porch, the latter consists of interlaced half-columns with foliate carvings and archivolt. The interior of the church was painted in the 17th and 18 century. The church has a life-size gothic crucifix from the second half of the 13th century, which probably originally came from the opening chorus (Triumphal Arch), and since then the cross is called Triumphcross.
Date the Church was built, dedicated or cornerstone laid: 01/01/1589
