In May, 2006, the brand new Mercedes-Benz museum opened to the public. If in the area, this is definately a museum not to be missed.

Say what you will about the architecture, it certainly is eyecatching (although from some angles looks like a stack of Pringles potato chips). And the elevators which whisk you up to the top where the tour starts are something taken straight from a Buck Rogers cartoon.

The museum is designed in a spiral. You start at the top with the historical beginnings of the internal combustion engine and the first motorized vehicles built by Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz and then work your way down. At the lower levels you'll find the Formula 1 and other racing exhibits.

A historical perspective of the role of Daimler-Benz in the armaments industry leading up to and during WWI and WWII is included as well as an apologetic treatment of the company's shameful use of forced labor during WWII.

A sometimes clunky audio guide is provided free of charge which you will need to view a couple of very worthwhile movies encountered along the way. Otherwise exhibits are presented in both German and English.

There is ample parking available. Those going by public transport should take the S1 S-bahn (suburban train) to the "Gottlieb-Daimler Stadion" station and then follow the signs.
