In 1807, Josef Vitus Becher started making Carlsbader English Bitter herbal tincture as a stomach medicine. Later it gained popularity as a herbal liquor and in 1867 Johann (Jan) Becher built the new production site. Since 1918 the liquor is known as Becherovka.
In 1974 the production was moved to a new factory in Bohatice and the original site was converted to a museum and souvenir shop.
The guided tour takes 45 minutes, it is available in Czech, English, German and Russian, and the visitors are shown the original production site, the pipelines connecting the cellars, view a movie about Becherovka history and taste some of the specialties.
