The Missinaibi

Built in 1952, the Missinaibi, whose name means "traces left by the water", is a 14-ton tugboat measuring 14 metres long driven by a six-cylinder Cummins diesel engine that generated 330 horsepowers. The tugboat built by the Russel-Hipwell Engines Ltd. of Owen Sound, Ontario, was first purchased by the Pineland Timber Company, and was sold in 1956 to the Gatineau-based Canadian International Paper Company, which later became the CIP.

The Missinaibi was used to convey logs on the Ottawa River until the early 1970s. The photo that made it memorable was taken from the banks of Hull, on the site of the Museum of Civilization, by renowned photographer Malak in 1963. In the illustration, the reverse of the Canadian dollar bill 1973-87 series, you can see the Missinaibi advancing through the logs on the Ottawa River with the Parliament Buildings in the background."
