Glacial lakes of
the Sumava |
-
Eight
kettle lakes are located in the Šumava mountain
range. On the Czech side of the mountain range we can found Cerné
lake, Certovo lake, Plešné lake, Prášilské lake and Laka lake. In Bavaria there is
Kleiner Arbersee Lake, Grosser Arbersee Lake and Rachelsee lake.
-
All of these
tarns originated from the last ice
age. At that time (about 10 000 years ago) the eleven glaciers modeled slopes of the Šumava. These glaciers created kettle holes and
moraines.
-
Initially the ten lakes were in
the Šumava but two of them have ceased to
exist.
-
In the twentieth century industrial exhalations resulted in the acidification of water in
lakes. For this reason fish in the lakes became exctinct. At present, the water pH is slowly
increased.
|
-
Total area of Grosser Arbersee lake is 7.2 hectares. It is the largest lake in the Bavarian side of Sumava mountains (This mountain range is also known as Czech and Bavarian
Forest).
-
Perimeter of the
tarn is 1500 meters.
-
The bottom of the lake consists of two depressions. Depth of the western depression is 9 meters and depth of the eastern depression is 16
meters.
-
The Geigenbach (also named Arberseebach) brook flows through the lake. This brook is a tributary of the Regen
river.
-
Total volume of water in the lake is 0,45 millions cubic
meters.
-
The lake is located in the kettle
of Grosser Arber (1 456 m, the highest summit of the Bavarian Forest) in altitude of 934 metres.
-
The dominant feature of the kettle is rocky cliff which is high up to 360
meters.
-
The
total catchment area of this tarn is 258 hectares.
Interesting things about the lake |
-
In the past the lake was used as a source of water for floating of
wood.
-
At present the restaurant is located on the eastern bank of the lake.
-
Part of the surface of the tarn is used for recreational boating. The western part of the lake is part of a nature
reserve.

-
Na západe kar
uzavírá impozantní jezerní stena vysoká 360 metru.
