"Importante monumento, é um dos templos cristãos mais antigos do país. Necrópole pública, desde a Idade do Ferro, foi depois uma ermida de romagem, associada à ocorrência de milagres e panteão dos mestres da Ordem de Santiago durante a Idade Média. As construções iniciaram-se no século XIII pelos cavaleiros de Santiago na altura da reconquista, foram depois ampliadas e engrandecidas no século XIV e transformadas desde o século XVI.
Uma verdadeira jóia do património de Alcácer do Sal, é um edifício de grande valor arquitectónico composto pelo corpo central da igreja, prolongada por uma capela-mor abobadada e por um alpendre quadrado.
Do lado direito da igreja, fica a Capela do Tesouro (século XIII), com o pequeno santuário independente. Há outras duas capelas. A dos Mestres ou de São Bartolomeu, mandada construir por D. Garcia Peres, em 1333, que é um invulgar e sublime exemplar do gótico tercentista, onde está a imagem de Nossa Senhora da Cinta, objecto de grande devoção das parturientes, nas vésperas dos partos. E a capela sepulcral de Maria de Resende, construída para albergar o túmulo do seu marido, Diogo Pereira, comendador-mor de Santiago, em 1427."

"Important monument, is one of the oldest Christian churches in the country. And the sepulchral chapel of Maria de Resende, built to house the tomb of her husband, Diogo Pereira, chief commander of Santiago in 1427."
