There are two locations for walks described by the leaflet supplied by the Northern Viaduct Trust. Here is described the walk near Kirkby Stephen. The leaflet is downloadable from NVT.org.uk and available from TIC in Kirkby Stephen, but this walk can be done without it. The leaflet adds to the experience. Those of you with a smartphone can download information. This small section of line was built by South Durham and Lancashire Union railway to get coke over the Pennine hills to iron ore smelters in Furness. The line closed after 100 years of use in 1960s.
NVT took over in 1990s, creating access for all. There is a ramp walkway down to the track bed from the NVT parking, which is level and well drained. There are 2 plate layers huts, each of which has interpretative boards describing the history of the former line and old photographs of accidents. The map at above coordinates has information. Take a copy. There is plenty of free parking in Kirkby Stephen. Follow the Nateby Road to the start.
From the map, cross the metal bridge and walk downstream past the Poetry stones of the poetry path. See Nearby Waymarks. Continue along the track bed to the tarmac road to Hartley Quarry. You pass 2 huts which have the interpretative boards and photographs in. Either return the way you came or loop down in to Kirkby Stephen walking upstream beside the Eden river. Look out for more poems on stones. See Nearby Waymarks.
Free parking is on south west side of Stenkrith bridge.
