Built in 1070, the Temple of Literature is both a Confucian temple and the first university of Vietnam. The university was established to educate Vietnam's bureaucrats, nobles and other members of the elite. It was in operation from 1076 to 1779.

The site is divided into five courtyards. In the third courtyard we can see 82 stone steles. They sit upon stone tortoises and are inscribed with the names of 1306 men who were awarded doctorates at the Temple of Literature between 1484 and 1779. In the fourth courtyard, we can visit the Dai Thanh sanctuary, where Confucius and his four closest disciples are worshiped.

Through the years, the temple has been destroyed various times by wars and other disasters, and has gone through several major restoration in 1920, 1954, and 2000. Today the site is one of the important historical and cultural sites of Hanoi and the country and used for organizing cultural and scientific events.
