Le pont Saint-Martial, à Limoges, a été construit en 1215 sur les bases d'un pont gallo-romain.
Il est situé en contrebas de l'ancien forum gallo-romain - actuel hôtel de ville - dans le prolongement de l'ancien cardo maximus, axe principal nord-sud de la ville antique. Ce pont fut à l'origine construit par les Romains afin de traverser à sec la Vienne et facilitait ainsi les échanges sur la voie reliant Avaricum (Bourges) et le sud de la Gaule. En 1182, Henri II Plantagenêt, roi d'Angleterre, duc d'Aquitaine et donc suzerain de Limoges, fit détruire le pont gallo-romain pour punir la cité de son infidélité. Le pont ne fut reconstruit que vingt-trois ans plus tard sur les bases de l'édifice antique.
Le pont possède sept arches en arc ; d’une longeur de 85 mètres .Un quartier s'était développé sur la rive droite de la Vienne autour de l'église Sainte-Félicité. Il existe encore quelques demeures médiévales et classiques, dont l'une d'entre elles accueillit Molière durant une nuit en 1669. Aujourd'hui il apparaît isolé du reste de la ville, dominé par le pont de la Révolution, le quai Saint-Martial, et sur l'autre rive par la rue de Babylone prolongée par la route de Nexon.
Un pont à voûtes en maçonnerie, usuellement appelé pont en maçonnerie ou pont en pierre ou pont voûté, désigne une technique de fabrication des ponts, mais constitue surtout une des grandes familles de ponts qui a été mise en œuvre de l’Antiquité jusqu’au début du XXe siècle .
Les ponts en maçonnerie constituent une classe spécifique de la famille des ponts en arc, caractérisée par des réactions d'appui sur les culées tendant à les écarter. Les matériaux constitutifs des voûtes sont des pierres taillées, très résistants à la compression mais peu à la flexion, alors que les matériaux des autres familles de ponts en arc (bois, béton, béton armé, béton précontraint, métal, composites) présentent une certaine élasticité et peuvent travailler en flexion, autorisant des portées plus importantes.

The Saint-Martial at Limoges, was built in 1215 on the foundations of a Gallo-Roman bridge.
It is located below the old Gallo-Roman forum - the current City Hall - a continuation of the old cardo maximus, the main north-south axis of the ancient city. This bridge was originally built by the Romans to cross the dry Vienna and facilitating exchanges on the road linking Avaricum (Bourges) and southern Gaul. In 1182, Henry II, King of England, Duke of Aquitaine and thus suzerain of Limoges, had destroyed the bridge Gallo-Roman to punish the city of his infidelity. The bridge was rebuilt only twenty-three years later on the basis of the ancient building.
The bridge has seven arches arc of a length of 85 meters. A district had developed on the right bank of the Vienne around the church of Sainte-Felicite. There are still some classic and medieval houses, one of them greeted Molière overnight in 1669. Today it is isolated from the rest of the city, dominated by the bridge of the Revolution, the Quai Saint-Martial, and on the other side of the Rue de Babylone extended by road from Nexon.
