Fossar de les Moreres is a memorial square neighbouring the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar. At the centre of the plaza there is a memorial surmounted by the torch with the eternal flame. It was built to honour the defenders of the city who died after the Siege of Barcelona, a bloody battle at the end of the Spanish Succession War in 1714. The square was constructed under the rule of King Charles III and the brave warriors were buried there. Nowadays, it is still an important place of remembrance. Every year on the National Day of Catalonia (Diada Nacional de Catalunya), which takes place on September 11th, the day on which the Catalans pay homage to their gallant ancestors.
