The Botanical Garden

The Botanical Garden is a scientific garden, designed in the mid-nineteenth century to complement modern and useful botany education and research at the Polytechnic School.

The venue, on Monte Olivete, had already more than two centuries of tradition in the study of botany, started with the Jesuit college of the Lark, based here between 1609 and 1759.

For it's installation was prepared a draft of regulation in 1843. However, it is only since 1873, initiated by the Conde de Ficalho and de Andrade Corvo, teachers at the Polytechnic School, which begins planting.

The huge diversity of plants collected by their first gardeners, the german E. Goeze and the french J. Daveau, from the four corners of the world where there were territories under Portuguese sovereignty, made ??plain the importance of the colonial power which then represented Portugal, but in Europe it was just a small nation and marginal. Edmund Goeze, the first head gardener, outlined the "Class" and Jules Daveau was responsible for the "Arboretum."

Some collections deserve special mention. The remarkable diversity of palm trees, coming from all continents, gives unexpected slant to various locations in the tropical garden. Cycads are one of the symbols of the Garden.

Authentic living fossils represent ancient floras, most of which went extinct. Today, they are all of great rarity, with only certain species are preserved in botanical gardens. The garden is particularly rich in tropical species originating in New Zealand, Australia, China, Japan and South America, which attests to the mildness of the climate of Lisbon and the peculiarities of the microclimates created in this Garden.

The November 4, 2010 the Botanical Garden was rated as a national monument.
