The Natural Reserve of the Tagus Estuary covers an area of ??14,192 ha, which includes an extensive area of ??estuarine waters, fields intersected by creeks, marshes, salt flats and alluvial agricultural land (marshlands). Is inserted in the most upstream of the estuary, distributed by the municipalities of Alcochete, Benavente and Vila Franca de Xira and not exceeding 11 m in altitude and depth of 10 m.

On the banks of the estuary develops the marsh, whose floristic community lives under the influence of water brought by the tide. Region of high productivity at the level of polychaetes, molluscs and crustaceans, is true motherhood for various fish species, as is the case of sole and sea bass. Among the sedentary species typically estuarine was the highlight of goby-shrimp-and-sand Moor. For migratory fish like the lamprey, shad and eel the Tagus is the site of transition between the marine and river.

However, it is the water birds that attaches to the Tagus estuary status of the most important wetland in the country and one of the most important in Europe. The herds of wintering species reach up to about 120,000 individuals. The counts indicate that winter regularly carried out in this protected area more than 10,000 ducks and 50,000 waders, of which stands the tailor, with a number of up to 25% of the population in Europe winterer. Many other species also attest to the biological richness and value for the Conservation of Nature in this region, including the flamingo, the brant, the thorn-apple-breasted black-and milherango.
