The railway station of Brig opened in 1874. It was the terminal station of the railway line down the Rhone valley to Lake Geneva. In 1906 the Simplon tunnel connected Brig with Italy in the south and in 1913 the Lötschberg tunnel added a northbound connection to Bern and the rest of German speaking Switzerland. Finally in 1926 the narrow gauge line to Central Switzerland and Grisons opened and was connected with the line from Visp to Zermatt in 1930.

In 2007 the opening of the Lötschberg Base tunnel shifted some of the traffic to Visp but Brig remains an important junction. Brig is part of the most important railway connection from Western Switzerland and France to Northern Italy and the second most important line from Northern Switzerland to Italy. These lines are operated by the SBB and the BLS. The narrow gauge lines of the MGB are located in front of the building where also several bus lines to the surrounding valleys have their stops. The famous tourist train Glacier Express from St. Moritz to Zermatt is also passing Brig.

Next to the passenger station there is also a huge freight train station and a boarding station for car transports.
