East Greeland is one of the most sparsely populated places on the planet. The main town of Tasiilaq has around 1500 people while half a dozen other settlements within 500 miles must have about the 1500 people between them. Kulusuk is both a small island and a town of around 300 people. The reason that the airport was built here is that it was the only place where flat land could be found.

It is not cheap to fly to Kulusuk, but most of the air fare is paid for before you land. The mountains as you fly in are out of this world. The usual approach is via a valley from the south east with mountains 200 m off each wing tip.

With 1 terminal building you often find that the person who works at the hotel is the same person selling drinks in the terminal and then once you get through to the departure gate, he is there selling duty free. There are 3 flights a week from Iceland on Air Iceland and 1 or 2 more from Nuuk and Copenhagen on Air Greenland. On days when there are flights, there is also an hourly helicopter service to Tasiilaq which is 10 minutes away.

I speak from experience in that with the weather in Greenland , the visibility is often very low so no planes can land. I was stranded for 3 days!!!

Most of the traffic through this airport is heliskiiers and people going on expeditions on the Glacier.
