La mystérieuse rue Saint-Jacques. À l’époque, les Français ont surnommé la principale artère financière du Canada « rue Saint-Jacques » et les Anglais « rue Saint-James ». Cette rue qui rime avec opulence et influence représentait la deuxième en importance dans ce qui est maintenant connu comme Montréal. Un ancêtre digne. Le premier Hôtel St-James à embellir les rues de Montréal était une maison de grand prestige, un lieu où les femmes en beauté et les hommes influents sirotaient du scotch servi dans une grande salle de danse. En 1870, les architectes importants Hopkins et Wily ont reçu le mandat d’y construire un plus grand édifice. À l’époque, le premier port commercial du pays était celui de Montréal, qui se développait à une vitesse folle. En 1899, quatre étages additionnels ont été ajoutés à l’édifice d’origine, sous la supervision d’Edward Maxwell, un architecte de renommée internationale. Ensuite, en 1929, au début de la Grande Dépression, le Merchants Bank -florissant en dépit de la crise financière - a été vendu à la société de fonds Nesbitt-Thompson.
