Carol Chamberlain, who owns Chamberlains hairdressers in Bridge Street, thought justice would be done when the vandal who smashed her shop window pleaded guilty.
But she was devastated when magistrates ordered the 21-year-old to pay her just £250 in compensation for causing more than £600 worth of damage. And the payment will be made in instalments of £10 a month, meaning the compensation will take more than two years to be paid.
“How is that fair? I don’t understand how that’s justice and I would like to ask the magistrate why he decided that,” said Carol.
The insurance for the shop does not cover vandalism, so Carol has had to pay for the window herself.“
I waited months for the court case before getting it fixed, thinking the person who smashed it would have to pay for it, but I had to in the end and it has cost me £660,” she said.
The hairdresser did not attend the court hearing but was told in a let-ter that David Philip Owain Watson pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage to Chamberlains and Latherapie, a shop next door.
