The Portmeirion Dog Cemetery was established by Mrs Adelaide Haig who lived in the original mansion, now the hotel, at Portmeirion from 1870 until her death in 1917. She preferred the company of dogs to humans and kept her pack in the elegant Mirror Room where she would read sermons to them. The whole place became a wilderness as she would not allow the destruction of any living thing.
The wilderness is now cleared, the paths to the Dog Cemetery rediscovered and is now once again in use for its original purpose. A popular destination for visitors to Portmeirion who wander the trails.
