The totem poles are at the entrance to the Lookout Education Centre where the path leads into the nature area. There is a notice that gives background into the totem poles. It reads:
"Totem Poles
These two stunning totem poles were designed by Kat Flint, who was the winner of a Royal Parks Foundation design competition for foundation course students at the London College of Communication.
Kat's beautiful designs have been inspired by William Roscoe's poem 'The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshoppers Feast'. Visitors of varying heights ca make eye contact with and touch the different creatures and the spiralling shape draws the viewer around the piece. The smooth curves, carved patterns and peepholes encourage visitors to catch a glimpse of the insect world. The species are loosely based on the Holly Blue butterfly (Celastrina argiolus) and Meadow Grasshopper (Chorthippus parallelus), which Kat found particularly appealing as they are both vegetarian!
The timber for these beautiful totem poles was sourced from a fallen oak in Richmond Park and then carved by master craftsman Dan Cordell, Dan began his work with a chainsaw and then completed the fine detail of the totem poles with chisels. In Dan's own words: 'The totem poles are created from 'brown' Oak. This isn't a species but refers to the colouration given to the timber by beefsteak fungus as it attacks the living tree. It is much desired by craftsmen and furniture makers for its rich chocolate broen colour.'"
