Farní kostel v Sokolove je doložen již ve 13. století. Stredoveký kostel byl znicen v roce 1632 saským vojskem. V letech 1632-37 byl opraven a prestaven pozdne renesancne. Další, tentokrát barokní úpravu, nechal v letech 1671-81 provést Jan Hartvik Nostic. V roce 1672 byl kostel povýšen na arcidekanský. Vež, která byla ovlivnena saskou renesancí, byla pristavena v letech 1680 - 1681. Za trest ji staveli nevolníci - úcastníci povstání z roku 1680. Roku 1873 pri požáru mesta kostel vyhorel. Zarízení kostela je prevážne barokní. Pískovcová krtitelnice je datována 1679. Hlavní oltár z roku 1756 je doplnen o sochy svetcu od sochare a rezbáre Jakuba Eberle. Postranní oltáre pocházejí ze zrušeného servitského kostela sv. Michala v Praze a jsou dílem sochare Ignáce Platzera. Poslední oprava kostela se uskutecnila v letech 1993-94.

Further, this time baroque adjustment was commissioned during 1671-81 to John Hartvik Nostitz. In 1672 the church was elevated to the archdeacon. The tower, which was influenced by the Saxon Renaissance, was built in 1680 - as a punishment by the serfs - participants of the uprising of 1680. In 1873 a fire burned down the town church. The last repair of the church took place in 1993-94.
