Die heutige Klosterkirche Birnau wurde als Ersatz für eine kleine Wallfahrtskirche gebaut, die auf einem Hügel östlich von Nußdorf stand, einige Kilometer von dem Standort der heutigen Kirche entfernt. Der ausgewählte Ort lag auf einem Hügelvorsprung am Ufer des Überlinger Sees, oberhalb der klostereigenen Weinberge und der bereits existierenden Wirtschaftsgebäude (Schloß Maurach). Mit dem Entwurf für "Neu-Birnau" wurde der Konstanzer Architekt Peter Thumb beauftragt. Eine päpstliche Bulle erlaubte dem Salemer Kloster die Kirche zu errichten und die Marienstatue dorthin zu verlegen.
Die vordere Fassade steht parallel zum Seeufer und thront dadurch weithin sichtbar über dem See wie ein Bindeglied zwischen Gottes Schöpfung und dem Himmel. Die Umgebung der Kirche war (und ist bis heute) nahezu unbebaut, so daß keine anderen Gebäude die Sichtbarkeit
beeinträchtigen. Man nahm zugunsten der Fernwirkung sogar in Kauf, daß der Altar nicht wie bei Kirchen üblich nach Osten ausgerichtet werden konnte.
Der Bau besteht aus einem lang gezogenen Kirchenschiff ohne Seitenschiffe und einem vorgelagerten Querriegel, der die Wohn- und
Verwaltungsräume des Ordens beherbergt. Die Fassade auf der Seeseite erstreckt sich über elf Fensterachsen, die durch drei Paare von ionischen Kolossalpilastern optisch gegliedert sind. Das mittlere Paar umschließt das Eingangsportal und wird vom dreistufig gegliederten Glockenturm gekrönt. Der Außenanstrich ist in Weiß und Altrosa gehalten, bei dem aktuellen Aussehen handelt es sich um die originale Farbgebung. Die Turmspitze ist mit dem äbtlichen Doppelkreuz gekennzeichnet.
The current monastery church Birnau was built to replace a small shrine, which stood on a hill east of Nussdorf, a few kilometres from the site of the present church. The selected location was on a hill on the shores of Lake Überlingen, above the abbey's own vineyards and the existing farm buildings (Schloß Maurach). With the draft of "New Birnau" the Constance architect Peter Thumb was commissioned. A papal bull allowed the monastery of Salem to build the church and move the statue of Mary there.
The front façade is parallel to the shore and thus widely seen perched above the sea as a connecting link between God's creation and the heavens. The area surrounding the church was (and still is) almost undeveloped, so no other buildings interfere the visibility. In favour of the long range effect it was accepted that the altar could not be aligned to the east like normal.
The building consists of an elongated nave without aisles and an upstream cross bar, which houses the office and residential premises of the Order. The façade facing the lake extends over eleven window axes, which are divided visually by three pairs of colossal ionic pilasters. The middle pair encloses the entrance and is topped by a three-stage, structured bell tower. The outer coat is decorated in white and old rose, the actual look is the original colour. The spire is marked with the double cross of abbot.
