The Centenary of Winnipeg is celebrated with a large "100" on the nickel dollar coin in 1974. In the first "0" is a view of Main Street in 1874 featuring a Red River ox cart and several old buildings. The second "0" is a view of Portage Avenue and Main Street from 100 years later in 1974. The vantage point (the posted coordinates) is Portage Avenue and Garry Street looking east down Portage Avenue toward Main Street which is two blocks east. The tallest building in Winnipeg at the time, the Richardson Building (124 m / 407 ft), is in the centre of the scene. It's right at the corner of Portage and Main. The taller building to the right is the Royal Bank building with the Lombard Hotel (now the Fairmont Winnipeg) in between.

The main addition to today's scene is Canwest Place on the left side of the photo. It's now Winnipeg's tallest building (128 m / 420 ft) with the Richardson Building now in second place. In the upper right of the photo behind the Royal Bank Building is MTS Place Main which is seventh tallest.

Almost 2.8 million coins were issued. They are 100% nickel weighing almost 16 grams. Diameter is 32 mm and thickness is 2.6 mm. This was the first year that the nickel dollar and the special collector's issue of silver dollars had the same design.
