In Boston, along Atlantic Avenue, and next to South Station, is a location where you can rent bicycles. This location is one of several in the city run by 'Hubway.'

According to the web site for this operation:

"On Earth Day, April 21, 2011, Mayor Thomas M. Menino signed a contract with Alta Bicycle Share, officially announcing the launch of a bike share system in the City of Boston. Planned as a regional system, New Balance Hubway was initiated under Mayor Menino's nationally recognized Boston Bikes Program, which aims to build Boston into one of the world's premiere cycling cities. The City of Boston is working with MassDOT, MAPC, MBTA and the FTA to expand the system into more Boston neighborhoods and surrounding communities.

The New Balance Hubway system launched July 28, 2011 with 600 bicycles and 60 stations throughout Boston. Following launch Hubway immediately surpassed expectations. Within 10 weeks Hubway bikes had logged more than 100,000 rides, and by the end November had more than 3,600 annual members. During its first season a strong community of users formed that took an active part in the success of the system. Users reported damage, returned lost keys, docked loose bikes and even delivered engagement rings for each other. During the system launch, users worked together to distribute bikes throughout the city. Similar group efforts are planned to collect bikes as the system closes for the season."

The system is for both 'casual' and 'membership' users. Members pay $85 annually but have a key to access a bike anytime and pay a discounted rate on hourly use.

The station itself has a kiosk at one end and rows of bicycle holding areas where individual bicycles are stored.

This location is an ideal placement. South Station is a major transportation hub. South Station is a terminal for all the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) commuter rail lines that come from the south and west of Boston. It also is a red line station for the MBTA subway. There is also a bus terminal to the south, as well as an MBTA bus transit stop. From here there are several ways that you can go, including the Rose Kennedy Greenway.
