Am 22.10.1844 weihte die Stadt Frankfurt das von dem Bildhauer Ludwig von Schwanthaler geschaffene "Goethe-Denkmal" an der ehemaligen Stadtallee - der mittlere Teil des Roßmarktes wurde 1849 in Goetheplatz umbenannt - ein.
Auf einem kubischen Sockel mit allegorischen Reliefs und epischen Szenedarstellungen aus Goethes Werken, erhebt sich die überlebensgroße Bronzestatue in stehender Haltung. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg schwer beschädigt, 1944 zum Schutz vor Ort eingegraben, wurde es 1948 ins Liebighaus gebracht. Von 1952 bis 2007 stand das klassizistische Denkmal weiter westlich in der Taunusanlage. Mit der Neugestaltung des Goetheplatzes wurde auch das neu restaurierte Goethe-Denkmal wieder an seinen angestammten Platz zurückgesetzt.
Ludwig Michael von Schwanthaler (* 26. August 1802 in München; † 14. November 1848 ebenda) war ein bayerischer Bildhauer und gilt als Hauptmeister der klassizistischen Plastik in Süddeutschland. Als sein Hauptwerk gilt das Kolossalstandbild der Münchner Bavaria.
On 22.10.1844 the city of Frankfurt inaugurated the "Goethe monument" created by the sculptor Ludwig von Schwanthaler at the former city avenue - the middle part of the Roßmarkt (horse-market) was renamed in 1849 in Goetheplatz.
On a cubic base with allegorical reliefs and scenes from Goethe's epic scene works, the larger than life bronze statue rises in a standing posture. After having been badly damaged in WW II and buried at the site for protection, it was taken to the Liebieghaus in 1948. From 1952 until 2007, the classicist monument stood further west in the Taunusanlage. With the redesign of the place the newly restored Goethe monument was set back to its original place.
Michael Ludwig von Schwanthaler (* August 26, 1802 in Munich, † November 14, 1848 ibid) was a Bavarian sculptor and is a major master of classical sculpture in southern Germany. His main work is the colossal statue of the Bavaria in Munich.
