Located in the Besthoff Sculpture Garden, this bronze was done by Belgian Rene' Magritte (1898-1967). The 2 piece bronze was actually inspired by one of his own paintings.
"Here the tree roots paradoxically hold an axe, turning the reality on its head. Who could have chopped down the tree? Where are they now? Could the tree be responsible for its own demise? How did the ax get under the tree root? These questions are, of course, left unanswered."

The above quote was taken from the official Sculpture Garden Walking tour booklet.
