Not mentioned is that he twice ran for Governor of Vermont, unsuccessfully. Bored with law, he wrote satirical poetry, eventually outselling Hawthorne and Tennyson. He is best known now for what was not one of his best known works then, "The Blindmen and the Elephant."
Less than 100 yards east of here is a Vermont Historical Marker describing the contribution of the Saxe family to this area.
The Highgate Historical Society says the Saxe homestead started with a log cabin where the white farmhouse is. The farmhouse was built over the cabin which was then removed from inside the house.
