This axle is one of only a few remnants of locomotives which carried lumber & pit props from the Pineridge lumber mill site & this harbour from 943-196?. It was founded just west of here at the former terminus, which was later filled to elevate the harbour.
A portion of a log cart, manufacture by the Kilby Iron Works Anniston, Alabama, owned and operated by former Alabama Governor Thomas Erby Kilby, Sr. The lumber operation was in full swing in Grand bahama at that time exporting lumber produced from local pine to the US, the Caribbian & Europe. In 1943, the lumber operation was brought from Alasco by Bahamian, Mr J W Roberts Sr, Mr Wallace Groves bought the operation from Mr Robert's estate in 1945 & used the profits from its sale to develop Freeport/Lucaya & upgrading of the current harbour here on Grand Bahama.
