One of the last places I would expect to find a rock and mineral display is inside of a travel rest area. However, there is a great display inside of the Hurly WI U.S. 2/51 rest area at Hurley Wisconsin, just near the Michigan border.
The area has a long history of mining and this display pays homage to the industry. Located outside of the rest area is a historical marker detailing the rich mining history. Once you walk in, you see a full size display of a miner, from the nearby Montreal and Cary mines. Also on display are interpretive displays, photos, a drill machine and several samples of rocks and mineral core samples.
It is not your everyday rest area. A great place to stretch the legs, human and four legged. Vending machines, weather reporting station, travel information and an educational journey into the area's mining history. A great quick rock and mineral display.
