Lievebrug - Bailey bridge Switchback Operation 1944 - World War II Sites on Waymarking.com

English: In the autumn of 1944 Canadian soldiers liberated the villages south of the Leopoldkanaal (Belgium).

On Oct. 6th 1944 they started construct a Bailey-bridge across the Leopoldcanal between Maldegem and Sint Laureins. A few days later they crossed the canal at the first fase of the so called: "Switchback Operation". The liberation of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen (Netherlands) followed.

This Baileybridge is probably one of the last remaining and still used Bailey bridges from Worldwar 2.
Cars can cross, but is it nowadays mainly used by Pedestrians or Bicycles.

Dutch: In het najaar van 1944 bevrijdden de Canadezen in de Slag bij het Leopoldkanaal de gemeenten ten zuiden van het Leopoldkanaal (België).

Op 6 oktober begonnen de soldaten van het 7e Canadese Infanterie Brigade van de 3e Canadese Infanterie Divisie de constructie van een “Bailey-bridge” over het Leopoldkanaal tussen Maldegem en Sint-Laureins. Een paar dagen later staken bij de eerste fase van de “Switchback Operation” de Canadezen het kanaal over. Daarna volgde de bevrijding van Zeeuws-Vlaanderen (Nederland).

De betreffende brug is vermoedelijk één van de laatste resterende en nog steeds in gebruik zijnde Baileybruggen uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Lokaal is deze bekend als de "Lievebrug".
Auto's kunnen erover, maar de brug wordt vnl. gebruikt door wandelaars en fietsers.
