The Old Putney burial ground is located in Upper Richmond Road.
The land was given to the parish by Roger Pettiward in 1763 when the burial grounds around the church had become inadequate.
It was closed in 1854 and became a public Garden in the 1960s.
When you enter from Upper Richmond Road you will see four restored table tombs, I was unable to decipher who was in the first one they are all Grade II listed buildings.
The others are to Robert Wood (1716-1771), Stratford Canning and Joseph Lucas.
When I first discovered this lovely place some of the tombs looked somewhat shabby, in fact the whole place did. However, a few years ago Wandsworth Council completed a £43,000 project to restore the tombs.
Also added is a large carved granite sign just outside the gates, unfortunately this is used as a bench by people using the bus stop and try as I might someone was always sitting on it when I tried to take a picture.
Apart from the obvious table tombs, if you carry on walking you will find where the majority of headstones have been laid out in the corner.
I estimated 50 headstones have been laid out here, at least 4 table tombs and a dozen standing headstones are found here so that gives us a total of between 60 and 70 graves.
As you enter the Burial Ground and look left you will see a very old building. The stone plaque says it was built in 1763.
I have taken most of the above info from a myriad of websites and thank them all.
