Soller was awarded city status by King Alfonso XIII of Spain. The island of Mallorca is one of the Balearic Islands that together form one of the ‘Autonomous Communities’. These communities are first level administrative division of Spain.

The area around Soller forms a natural bowl about 3 km away from the coast. It became rich from agriculture, mainly growing olives and oranges in the natural sun trap surrounding it. The area still has many working olive and orange groves, but agriculture has lost its importance and tourism now forms its major industry.

Above the text on the plaque is the coat of arms of Soller, two lions supporting an image of the Sun.
