Anmyeondo was once a peninsula, but a canal was dug several hundred years ago, severing it from the mainland. This welcome sign is at the north end of the bridge on Route 77 which was opened in 1970, once again connecting Korea's sixth largest island to the rest of the country.
Anmyeondo is famous for its many beaches, forests, and fishing culture, and especially for its flowers. This sign actually bears several artistic elements. First, in the circle, is the slogan and logo for the coastal county of Taean, "Flower & Sea." Above it is a representation of the sea breezes Vertically the sign resembles a red pepper with detailed painting at the bottom. It bears the slogan, "Anmyeondo Sea Breeze Red Peppers." (안면도 갯바람고추) These hot peppers are an important staple of Korean cuisine.
