The 49th Parallel forms a nearly 2000km border between Canada and the United States. This sign is at the border crossing where I-29 meet with Hwy 75 near Pembina ND USA and Emerson MB Canada.

The border on the 49th parallel from Lake of the Woods to the Rockies was established under the 'Convention of 1818'. The 'Oregon Treaty of 1846' extended the border through the Rockies to the Strait of Georgia.
