This is one, the Chapel, of the several "steps" scattered around across the city.

In the gorgeous city of Guimarães!

In the first decades of the eighteenth century, the ceremonial of the Via Crucis in Guimarães, at the time of Lent, were already organized by the Brotherhood of Consolation and Holy Steps. To this end, crosses were distributed in different areas of town and the representation of different stages of the Passion of Christ was made ??by figures from Braga. In 1726, the Brotherhood has launched down to work of building, in different parts of town, a Via Crucis in granite, composed of seven small chapels, filled with carved wooden figures painted in natural size.

This set of steps or stations of the religious life of Christ, were originally seven, when they were built in 1727. However, they were transferred or dismantled, leaving only five today: Step of Largo do Carmo, Step of Rua Santa Maria, Step of Largo João Franco, the Step of Senhora da Guia and Step of Campo da Feira.

"Oratório dos Santos Passos. São sete pequenas capelas, todas de pedra, compondo a Via-Sacra, com sete passos da Paixão de Jesus Cristo, com o figurado em madeira do tamanho natural e de boa escultura. Foram levantados a expensas da irmandade, e são todos os anos visitados pela procissão de Lázaro, no respectivo domingo, e pela Via-Sacra, que costuma sair de S. Francisco em todas as domingas de quaresma depois do sermão, nesta igreja. São igualmente visitados no decurso da quaresma por muitas Vias-Sacras, particulares, e por grande número de fiéis, que se entregam a estes exercícios de piedade. O primeiro destes passos, que representa a primeira queda do Redentor, fica ao lado direito da capela da Senhora da Guia, encostado à antiga muralha; o segundo encosta-se à capela de S. Brás, nos claustros da Oliveira; o terceiro em Santa Clara; o quarto no largo do Carmo, fronteiro à igreja; o quinto na rua de D. Luís I, noutro tempo chamada, neste ponto, largo dos Laranjais; o sexto na rua Nova de Santo António, encostado à antiga muralha, para onde veio, do Campo da Misericórdia, em Março de 1879, tendo estado antes disso no largo de S. Bento, hoje também rua de D. Luís I; o sétimo finalmente encosta-se à igreja de S. Sebastião, sobre o adro, a norte."
