Reconstruction of the city´s old gate, once parte of the city walls.
This gate gave direct access to the beach landing docks that once existed where today stands the Avenida do Mar.
It was constructed in 1689 by command of the Governor Lourenço de Almeida and demolished in 1911 together with part of the city walls that had lost it´s military importance.
In September 2004 the cityv decided to put it back in it´s original place as part of the historical patrimony renovation program motivated by the celebration of Funchal 500 years.
it has been reconstructed in concrete and covered with stone from the region following the original architectural features.
Abovem the crown, the royal coat of arms and the inscribed stone are the original ones.
