Die Mittenwaldbahn, im Volksmund ebenfalls als Karwendelbahn bezeichnet, ist eine Eisenbahnstrecke in den Alpen in Österreich und Deutschland. Sie verbindet Innsbruck über Seefeld (beide in Tirol, Österreich) und Mittenwald mit Garmisch-Partenkirchen (beide in Bayern, Deutschland).
Die Mittenwaldbahn wurde als elektrische Lokalbahn in den Jahren 1910 bis 1912 von den Ingenieuren und Bauunternehmern Josef Riehl und Wilhelm Carl von Doderer erbaut. Die Strecke wurde am 28. Oktober 1912 eröffnet[1] und gemeinsam von den Staatsbahnen Österreichs und Bayerns betrieben. Sie war eine der ersten mit hochgespanntem einphasigem Wechselstrom betriebenen Bahnen. Dadurch hatte sie großen Einfluss auf die Normen des elektrischen Bahnbetriebes in Mitteleuropa. Zusammen mit der Außerfernbahn bindet sie das Außerfern (jenseits des Fernpasses gelegen) an Tirol an.
Die Mittenwaldbahn führt überwiegend in Süd-Nord-Richtung zwischen mehreren Teilgebirgen der Nördlichen Kalkalpen hindurch. Im Süden verläuft sie aus dem Inntal von Innsbruck kommend unter anderen über Hochzirl und vorbei am Zirler Berg nach Seefeld, das zwischen Mieminger Gebirge im Westen und Karwendelgebirge im Osten liegt.
Von dort führt sie zwischen Karwendelgebirge im Osten und Wettersteingebirge im Westen über den Scharnitzpass und die Grenze Österreich–Deutschland nach Mittenwald; beim Scharnitzpass führt sie ein Stück entlang des Oberlaufs der Isar. Danach knickt sie nach Westen ab, wobei sie zwischen Wettersteingebirge im Süden und Estergebirge im Norden nach Garmisch-Partenkirchen führt.
Bemerkenswert an der Trassenführung der Eisenbahn ist die lange tunnelreiche Hanglehnenstrecke bis zur Martinswand und die Schleife mit vielen Viadukten durch den Schlossbachgraben oberhalb von Zirl.

The Mittenwald Railway, also popularly known as Karwendelbahn is a railway line in the Alps in Austria and Germany. It connects Innsbruck via Seefeld (both in Tyrol, Austria) and Mittenwald to Garmisch-Partenkirchen (both in Bavaria, Germany).
The Mittenwald railway was electric as local train in the years 1910 to 1912 by the engineers and contractors Josef Riehl and Wilhelm Carl von Doderer. The route was launched on 28 Opened in October 1912 [1] and operated jointly by the State Railways of Austria and Bavaria. She was one of the first high-tension single-phase AC-powered cars. Thus they had a huge impact on the standards of the electric railway operation in Central Europe. Together with the Außerfernbahn it binds to the Außerfern (located across the Fern Pass) in the Tyrol.
The Mittenwald railway runs mainly in south-north direction between several mountain ranges of the Northern Limestone Alps through. In the south it runs out of the Inn Valley at Innsbruck and others about Hochzirl Zirler past the mountain to Seefeld, which lies between Mieminger Mountains in the west and the east Karwendelgebirge.
From there it runs between the east and Karwendelgebirge Wettersteingebirge in the west over the Scharnitzpass and the Austria-Germany border at Mittenwald; Scharnitzpass when she leads a short distance along the upper reaches of the river Isar. Then it bends to the west, where it passes between weather stone mountains in the south and the north Estergebirge to Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
The remarkable thing about the route of the railway tunnel is the long haul back to the rich slope Martin Wall and the loop with many viaducts through the castle moat creek above Zirl.
