The church was built around the year 1250. In 1530-1673 it was owned by the reformed Evangelic Church and it has been fortified by the outer wall, as this region became a frontier with the expanding Ottoman Empire.

In the second half of 18th century, the church was rebuilt in baroque style. Of the original building there is left the tower, wall outlines, and one arch.

Currently it is used as a filial church of Roman Catholic parish in Dobrá Niva.

The recent repairs took place in 1928, 1938, and 1972-1973.
