The current fort was built in the second half of the nineteenth century (in the place where another fort was erected at the beginning of that century, built as part of the Lines of Torres Vedras).

Stronghold hidden in the landscape, given the structures built on slopes, and considered fundamental to the protection of Lisbon, due to the implementation privileged dominating one of the main entrances of the capital, Trancão bridge over the river and the river itself, part of the river Tagus and the path railways. It is one of the more valuable and characteristic of the defensive system of land known as the Enclosure Security Sacavém-Caxias and the fortifications of the 1st line of the entrenched camp which was eventually built, along with the Stronghold of Monsanto, the Fort of Ameixoeira and of Caxias .
