Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in the city of Porbandar in western India state of Gujarat today. His father was a local politician, and his mother was a devout Vaishnava. As was the custom in their culture at this time, at the age of 13 years, the family of Gandhi held his arranged marriage to Kasturba Gandhi, 14, through an agreement between their families.
The principle of satyagraha, often translated as "the way of truth" or "the pursuit of truth", has inspired generations of democratic activists and anti-racism, including Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela. Gandhi often said the simplicity of its values??, derived from traditional Hindu beliefs: truth (satya) and nonviolence (ahimsa).
