During the early 1890's Cuba, the Philippines, Guam and Puerto Rico struggled for independence from Spain's control. The United States was interested in purchasing Cuba long before the war because there was more than $50 million invested in large tracts of land to raise sugar. The entire country was placed under martial law, and President Cleveland declared that the United States might intervene if Spain failed to end the crisis in Cuba. After a mine sank the battleship Maine in the Havana Harbor, the United States declared war on Spain. Commodore Dewey defeated the Spanish Fleet at the Battle of Manila Bay in the Philippines. The Marines captured Guantanamo Bay. Colonel Theodore Roosevelt and the Rough Riders went up Kettle Hill. General Jacob Kent charged up San Jaun Hill inflicting 1,700 casualties and General Miles took Puerto Rico with virtually no opposition. On December 10, 1898, Spain and the United States signed the peace treaty in Paris. This treaty established th independence of Cuba, ceded Puerto Rico and Guan to the U.S., and allowed the purchase of the Philippine Islands from Spain for $20 million. Of the 2,456 deaths that occurred during this war, 90% perished from infectious diseases.:

The Veterans Memorial Park in Truth or Consequences in New Mexico is adjacent the Dianne Hamilton Military Museum and features monuments, plaques, a replica of the statue of liberty, a history walk designed in the shape of a Congressional Medal of Honor medallion, and a 1/2 size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.

The museum includes educational exhibits and collections that include war memorabilia, a Buffalo Soldier display, a Military button collection, and military items that belonged to local residents. The museum exterior wall that faces the main street is adorned with an impressive mural of soldiers in lush vegetation and a Huey helicopter.
