Located in Massarelos, the Romantic Museum of Quinta da Macieirinha is surrounded by the green area of the Gardens of the 'Palácio de Cristal' and has a fabulous view over the River Douro. The surrounding gardens, the wood and the former farmland provide a bucolic romantic atmosphere. The 18th century building was built for recreational purposes. Its interior spaces intend to reconstitute environments of the haute bourgeoisie from the nineteenth century in Porto. It was in this house that the exiled King of Sardinia and Prince of Piedmont, Carlos Alberto of Savoy-Carignano, spent his last days, dying on July 28, 1849.
Among the highlights is the "King's Room" where King Carlos Alberto of Piedmont and Sardinia received his guests, and which is furnished and decorated in 19th century style.
Another noteworthy section is the "Canvases Room" which has huge tempera-painted canvases depicting scenes of typical Romantic ruins.
