The aqueduct of Serpa wasn't build to supply water to the city population or even any religious community. It was designed only to meet the needs of private consumption of a Manor House of Serpa-Solar dos Condes de Ficalho.
The aqueduct was erected in the late 17th century and it rises on the outskirts of the city, taking advantage of a spring of water from a nearby sierra. Already at the end of the path, the high pillars of the aqueduct, which underpin the arcades back perfect, are based directly on the wall of the castle of Serpa, forming an unusual and contrasting classical structure.
