The Crow Wing River and Mississippi Rivers merge in this area of great historical and cultural signifance. From the earliest days of Minnesota people have converged at this point.
In the mid 1700's the area was home to the Sioux. It was in 1768, that the Ojibwe moving ever westward came into the Sioux territory. There were many skirmiches and after a successful Sioux battle, with captive Ojibwe women, the Sioux traveled down the Mississippi. The Ojibwe lay in wait, digging rifle pits in to the steep bank, and ambushing the Sioux as they traveled downstream. The rifle pits are still visible nearly 250 years later.
The Battle of 1768 was a major turning point as it established the Ojibwe in the area and the Sioux were forced to move westward.
